Adam Ytterberg

Fast-rising Swedish figurative painter Adam Ytterberg has come to gain notoriety as a next generation artist to watch in his native Sweden. Adam earnt an MFA degree at Konstfack in Stockholm earlier this spring and prior to it had already presented his first substantial solo exhibition with his gallery CFHILL. Adam is one of the artists represented in the museum collection.

We checked in with this new luminary to learn more.

Q: You showed a great deal of guts opting to present sketches rather than final paintings in your MFA solo. Why’s that?

A.Y: At any given time a few parallel processes intersect my work; e.g. a writing practice and a performative one, and they are crucial for me to paint. In my grad solo I wanted to shine light on these processes. I think there was a need in the moment to disclose the underlying making of my paintings, and right there and then I felt brave enough to do so.

Q: That exhibition let on the possibilities of a graphic novel surfacing in the future - do tell.

A.Y: You know, an original hard copy of graphic novel that I’ve made over time, actually exists, where paintings and text together present as a book of a fairytale of sorts. It’s only ever read in public by my drag persona Greta, on very special occasion. We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for this book!
